FAQs

Getting Started

How do I get started?

Choose a convenient time and book a  20-minute welcome call or a therapist consultation to be matched with a therapist, or email us at info@therapylab.com.

Is my appointment in person or via telehealth?

It depends! We are offering telehealth appointments in Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Michigan, Texas and Washington. Additionally, we have offices in Los Angeles and La Jolla that are open at limited capacity.

Where do I find my video appointment link?

Ten minutes prior to your appointment, you’ll receive an e-mail reminder with a link to join your video session. Just click the link in your computer browser to open the session. If you’d like to use your smartphone, download the Telehealth by Simple Practice app. Once the app is installed, click the link in your email appointment reminder, and your session will open on your smartphone.

Are you accepting new clients?

Yes! We are accepting new clients.

How long do I have to wait for my first appointment?

In most cases, we can book your first appointment within a week.

How long is each session? What's the frequency?

Each session is 45-50 minutes, a standard length for therapy sessions. Clients usually book sessions on a weekly basis at a recurring time for convenience, although we offer some flexibility with scheduling to meet your needs.

Do you provide mental health evaluations for emotional support animals or for the workplace?

We do not provide these evaluation services at Therapy Lab.

Fees + Insurance

What is the fee per session?

The fee per session is $225 - $350, depending on the clinician. Within the first few sessions, your therapist should be able to provide an estimated total number of sessions based on your goals.

How do you determine therapists' rates?

We base rates on a number of factors, including degree, specialization(s), practice location, and availability, along with number of years on our Therapy Lab team delivering TL plans.

Can I use insurance?

If you have a PPO insurance plan, you may be able to get up to 80% of each session reimbursed after you meet your deductible. (Please call your insurance company to verify.) We provide you with a monthly statement (or “superbill”) that you can submit to your insurance company. We do not directly accept insurance, Medi-Cal or Medicare.

If you are a USC student with insurance, you may be eligible for reimbursement up to 50% from your insurance company if your primary care physician makes a referral for mental healthcare. You will need to contact your primary physician and insurance company to verify and confirm the amount reimbursed.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations or appointment changes made with less than 48 hours notice are charged at the full session fee.

When will I get my superbill?

You’ll receive your superbill automatically on the 10th of each month. If you need your superbill sooner, please request by e-mail at info@therapylab.com.

Can I use my FSA or HSA?

Flexible spending accounts (FSA) and health savings accounts (HSA) are unique, tax-advantaged accounts that can be used to pay for healthcare expenses, and certain out-of-pocket costs. You may be able to use these accounts for session fees at Therapy Lab. We recommend contacting your employer or account provider(s) to verify whether you may utilize these benefits at Therapy Lab.

Do you accept Medi-Cal or Medicare?

We do not accept Medi-Cal or Medicare.

Methods

What is CBT?

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an extensively researched type of therapy that has been shown to be effective in treating a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, relationship issues, and IBS related distress. CBT involves working with your therapist collaboratively to change thinking and behavioral patterns and develop more effective coping skills. At Therapy Lab we embrace innovative new branches of CBT that have emerged in recent years including: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), The Unified Protocol (UP), and CBT-I for the treatment of insomnia. Treatment with CBT can include challenging unhelpful thinking patterns, practicing relaxation strategies, completing homework assignments, and facing fears.

What is evidence-based treatment (EBT)?

Evidence-based treatment means that we anchor your care in the best scientific evidence available. Not all therapy techniques are equally effective, and we focus on offering treatments that have been established as “effective” with strong empirical support. Evidence-based treatments have typically been tested in randomized clinical trials and carefully evaluated for their ability to reduce symptoms. One of the most widely studied and commonly used EBTs is cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).

What is time-limited therapy? How long can I remain a client at Therapy Lab?

Therapy Lab offers time-limited therapy plans (from 4 to 16 sessions). Our goal is to use science-based methods to give you tools to change your life, and we focus on therapeutic strategies that can help you in a shorter period of time. This means less time spent in therapy, and more money in your pocket.

The length of time you would like to stay at Therapy Lab is completely individualized and will vary depending on your needs. While we emphasize efficiency in our treatment plans, we try not to limit therapy sessions for clients who choose to stay longer. We offer both long-term and short-term care depending on your preferences and clinical needs, based on consultation with your therapist.

Do you work with children or teenagers at Therapy Lab?

Visit our KIDS tab to learn more about our newest offering, Therapy Lab Kids. We have four brief science-based therapy plans that address common needs for families. With five plans to choose from, our virtual sessions are designed for your family's goals, timeline, and budget.

Our sister practice, Golden Hour Therapy, also provides children, teens, and families (California residents) with evidence-based treatment. GHT providers have exceptional training and compassion for the struggles of childhood and the teenage years.
